Tests & Diagnosis
There are several tests that can be done to confirm a diagnosis after you have been seen by Dr Moloney. We don’t perform any of these tests here but if necessary you will be referred for one or more of the following investigations.
Laboratory Tests
These may be arranged to rule out metabolic abnormalities.
X-Rays
X-Rays use electromagnetic energy beams to produce images of tissues, bones, and organs, and are performed to diagnose tumours or bone injuries.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
An MRI is a diagnostic imaging procedure that combines the use of a large magnet, radio frequencies, and a computer to produce detailed images of soft tissues within the body.
Computed Tomography (CT or CAT Scan)
This is a diagnostic imaging procedure that combines the use of X-Rays and computer technology to produce many different views (slices) of the same body part. The images provide detailed views of bones and soft tissues.
Nerve Conduction Studies
These studies can detect problems with nerves and are often used along with EMG to differentiate a nerve disorder from a muscle disorder.
Electromyography (EMG)
EMG is used to detect diseases stemming from problems with the muscle itself, and is often used with NCS to differentiate a muscle disorder from a nerve disorder.
