From 1 April 2019 all Australian health funds will be changing their way of categorising their cover to make it easier for patients to compare the different funds.
Instead of lots of different covers with many different names all of the funds will have Gold, Silver, Bronze and Basic cover available. This will definitely make it easier to compare the prices.
If you need spinal surgery you need to have Silver or Gold cover. For pain implants (spinal cord stimulator, intrathecal morphine pump) you need to have Gold Cover.
You are still able to have one level of cover and choose to pay extra to have things covered that aren’t normally in your policy so it’s worth speaking with your fund to find out what your options are.
The main thing to remember is if it looks like you may need a back operation or neck operation in the future you will need to have Silver or Gold cover in order to be covered appropriately.
